The Homeland Security Advisory Council at the School of Public Policy hosts several noteworthy events, workshops and symposium focused on disaster preparedness, crisis management, and resiliency through engaging the public, private, and civic sectors.

SALUS Symposium

Current and prospective SALUS users gathered for the second SALUS Symposium, an exclusive breakout during the 2019 Workshop. During the Symposium, participants used SALUS to actively work through a dynamic, simulated scenario.

Crisis Leadership and Emergency Management Workshop

Over 250 crisis managers, public safety professionals, business leaders, and policymakers gathered together for the 2019 Crisis Leadership and Emergency Management Workshop.

Emergency Managers Executive Round Table

On a quarterly basis, HSAC hosts the Emergency Managers Executive Round Table, which provides a forum for county and city Emergency Managers. The Round Table addresses current and emerging issues, placing emphasis on the Southern California region. On March 12th, Robert Fenton from FEMA Region IX, and Jeff Toney, from Cal OES were in attendance.

More than thirty SALUS users from across the region gathered together to share how they use SALUS in their agencies and organizations. Topics included event and incident management, mass care, and public information.

Crisis Management Case Challenge

Five teams of graduate students presented their recommendations on how to increase disaster preparedness among Los Angeles' most vulnerable populations. Students represented California State University, Northridge; the University of Southern California; the University of California, Los Angeles; Pepperdine University; and Northeastern University.

Crisis Leadership: Paths to Success

At the L.A. Grand Hotel, Ethel McGuire, Assistant Chief of the Office of Homeland Security and Intelligence, Los Angeles Airport Police; Donna Boston, Director of Emergency Management, Orange County Sheriff's Department; Holly Crawford, Director of the Office of Emergency Services, San Diego County; and Eileen Decker, Former United States Attorney, Central District of California gathered to share their experiences managing wildfires, terrorist attacks, and other violent acts. They offered advice to rising crisis managers and insights concerning future trends in the industry.

The 2018 Verge Hawaii Conference by GreenBiz brought together experts in the private and public sectors to discuss technical, political, and cultural ways of building a clean and resilient economy. In her keynote address and two sidebar interviews, Devra Schwartz, HSAC Vice President of Operations, discusses the role of disruptive technology, GIS, and SALUS in crisis management.

The 2018 HSAC Gala brought together leading philanthropists in the Los Angeles community to celebrate and support our organization's work, and to recognize Chief Charlie Beck of the Los Angeles Police Department, and HSAC Board Member Norm Nixon.

Crisis Leadership and Emergency Management Workshop

Our inaugural Crisis Leadership and Emergency Management Workshop brought together high-level officials and executives from the private, public, and civic sectors to discuss some of the most pressing issues affecting our field today. Participants learned best practices in areas including supply chain resiliency, mass notification, and crisis leadership, and learned firsthand from officials who led the responses to recent mass-scale events including the Thomas Fire, Hurricane Harvey, and the Las Vegas Mass Shooting.
