The Hebrew Scriptures constitute an essential part of American political culture from the founding era to today. From the Puritan pulpit to modern presidents, the Revolution to civil rights, stories and images from the Old Testament are commonly used as the grounding for essential American arguments. Playing a prominent role in these discussions and debates is one of Scripture's better-known figures: Queen Esther, thrust into the spotlight and willing to sacrifice herself to save her people. In our 2026 Constitution Day Lecture, we welcome back Yeshiva University's Rabbi Dr. Stuart Halpern to explore in detail how Esther continues to be seen as a significant inspiration for millions of Americans across the political aisle. What does it mean for how we understand America today? Kosher lunch will be provided. |
