Note to second-year students:  completion of MPP 617 is a capstone preparatory course that may be required for students pursuing individual capstones (see "Capstone Notice" below).

Capstone Notice

MPP 617 "Designing and Writing Research Proposals" is considered the capstone preparatory course and may be a condition for taking an individual capstone. Students who do/did not take the "Designing and Writing Research Proposals" class who would like to be considered for an individual capstone in the Spring 2023 term must provide a 4-7 page proposal as outlined below. Students do not need to take a capstone in their area of specialization.

Students who take/took or are in MPP 617
  • Can register in ANY capstone
  • Can pursue group OR individual capstone projects
  • Do NOT need to submit a separate capstone proposal beyond what will be/was developed in MPP 619
Students who do/did not take MPP 617
  • Can register in any GROUP capstone
  • May be able to pursue an individual capstone with approval of their 4-7 page capstone proposal submission which must include the following:
      1. problem statement (1 page)--what is your problem and why do we care,
      2. background and literature review (2-3 pages)--what are the key data points and references, and who are the main stakeholders involved,
      3. methodology (for ALL projects) and data analysis plan (for projects intending to use quantitative analysis) (1-2 pages)--how are you planning to address the questions and what methods/data sources do you anticipate using,
      4. potential policy implications of your project (1 page), and
      5. appendix (no page limit), containing a detailed breakdown and description of specific research tasks, project timeline, completed IRB worksheet (if applicable), and bibliography.
    • Considerations include questions and hypotheses--what is driving the problem and what are some of the key questions that need to be addressed in order to inform the discussion, and conclusions--what do you expect to find and what would be the implications for your policy
    • The proposal is to be submitted directly to the faculty member teaching the individual capstone by December 15.
    • Submission alone does not guarantee admittance to a class.

Eligibility to Register

Students are eligible to register if they are academically and financially in good standing. Students who have not submitted official transcripts will be unable to register until the transcripts are received by the Office of Admission. Note: Once a student registers, they have officially enrolled and are committed to attend class(es). Students with holds due to financial obligations should contact the Office of Student Accounts 310.506.4981 prior to registration. Students with holds due to missing documents should contact 310.506.7493.

Financial Responsibility Agreement

In order to register for the upcoming term, all students will need to electronically sign a Financial Responsibility Agreement. An item will be added to each students "To Do List," and a related registration hold applied to the student's record. To remove this hold, students should electronically sign this agreement by logging into WaveNet, go to "Student Center," then to "To Do List" located on the right side of the "Student Center."

Wait List Procedure

Students who are wait listed for courses should attend the first class session. If someone drops the class, then the first person on the wait list will be contacted. If the first person on the wait list still wants in the class, they drop the class they plan to replace it with and email Sheryl Covey when completed. They will then be added to the wait listed class. This process continues daily and as spaces become available until the last day of add/drop. A professor may, at his/her discretion, choose to add a student to a particular class outside of usual wait list procedures. In this case, the professor must submit an email providing details and student name or sign an add/drop form which the wait listed student will submit to the Office of the Dean.
