"The Open Mind" Host to Reflect on Historic 2016 Election

On the eve of the one-year anniversary of the historic 2016 election, we will look back at what the last year has to teach us about American citizenship, democracy, and public policy. Alexander Heffner, host of "The Open Mind" on PBS, will explore the promise and reality of an outsider candidacy-turned-presidency, the state of Congress, and the potential of a reform agenda on Monday, November 6, 2017, at 6:30 pm in the Wilburn Auditorium. He will also consider what specific actions have strengthened or undermined faith in civil society and democratic rule.

"The Open Mind," hosted weekly by Alexander Heffner, is a thoughtful excursion into the world of ideas across politics, media, technology, the arts and all realms of civic life. Premiered in May 1956, "The Open Mind," was designed to elicit insights into the challenges Americans face in contemporary areas of national concern. Heffner began hosting the show in 2014, and in addition to his work on the show, Heffner has written for The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, USA Today, and RealClear Politics, among others. He has been interviewed about politics and education by PBS, C-SPAN, CNN and the BBC, and is a frequent speaker on college campuses across the US.
