The site captures the debate between Hoover—the "rugged individual" narrative -- and Roosevelt -- the "forgotten man" narrative -- in the 1930s over the role of government in both the economy and the every day life of the citizen and how it has shaped the nature of public policy for the last seventy five years. Do we have "a problem" and, if so, what should government do, if anything, and which level and which branch should do it. These vital questions of public policy where politics emerges as a crusade were formed in the 1930s.
