Residents of Whittier, CA are banding together to keep a local State Park open through a rather unorthodox means of funding. Under the leadership of the nonprofit Friends of Pio Pico, they are collecting bottles and cans for recycling money in order to keep the Historic Park Open. ”The nonprofit Friends of Pio Pico needs to raise $80,000 to keep Pio Pico open another year.” (you can read more here)
So far residents have raised about $3000 in the last few weeks. The Park is home to the 19th century adobe home of Pio de Jesus Pico IV, one time governor of then-Mexican California. You can read more about fundraising efforts here.
