Giving Summit and tax relief

We’ve heard a lot over the past few weeks about the proposal to limit tax relief for major donations to charities.  That is a big topic at this week’s Giving Summit in Whitehall:

Despite promises by the UK coalition government of a new Big Society, unleashing the potential of charities and volunteers, many charities in the UK have recoiled in horror from recent budget proposals that they deem harmful to their fundraising operations.

. . . The summit meeting, attended by the Institute of Fundraising and other groups, has been discussing a range of issues affecting charities, including the tax relief cap.

Response to the Civil Exchange Report

In The Guardian, Patrick Butler shares the response to the Civil Exchange report that he received from the office of Nick Hurd.  This highlights what that office sees as the “key achievements” in building a big society:

I publish the list below partly in the interests of balance, but partly to widen the debate around the government’s record on civic renewal and the voluntary sector. I’m interested to know to what extent the claims listed in three categories below are: (a) true or fair; (b) demonstrable achievements as opposed to aspirations; and (c) making a difference in the ways intended.
